'In Our Own Backyard’: Showcasing New Bedford

Thursday, September 16

PRIME TIME™ Travel is excited to announce the final event of our ‘In Our Own Backyard’ summer series, where we showcase hidden gems found close to home. These ‘drive-yourself’ events feature local places, sometimes  overlooked, that make our area such a wonderful place to live!

Join PRIME TIME on Thursday, September 16th as we experience four centuries of American history in one day in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Travel down a cobblestone path … hear stories of the whaling history … the textile industry … the Underground Railroad and finish the day with a tour of New Bedford’s active working waterfront and America’s #1 Fishing Port!

The day will begin with lunch at the Wamsutta Club. A New Bedford tradition of excellence since 1866, this club reflects an elegant era of yesteryear. Today’s lunch choices are Seafood Newburg over a Pastry Shell or Baked Stuffed Chicken. After lunch, we’ll board a trolley for a guided tour of historic New Bedford. We’ll pass by whaling Captain’s homes, learn the history of the local textile industry and hear about notable people of New Bedford history.

Our day will end with a visit to the New Bedford Fishing Heritage Museum. Dedicated to preserving and presenting the story of the fishing industry past, present and future; this museum boasts fascinating exhibits and stories. After our museum visit, we’ll enjoy a guided tour of the working waterfront and learn why New Bedford is considered the nation’s most valuable fishing port.
